about Sakiori Chicka

In Aomori Prefecture, located in the cold northern part of Japan, where cotton could not be cultivated, warm cotton was a very precious commodity. Therefore, even if the cloths became tattered, people lived there could not throw them away but teared them into thin strips eventually and reweaved to reproduce a new cloth, which is a handcraft technique or the woven fabric, called SAKIORI.The materials used in Sakiori CHICKA are not only mainly old kimonos but also colorful fabrics and threads are combined to be woven, which can be realized today. In a small atelier where to see a view of Aomori sea, it is carefully woven one by one using an old shaped handloom called Jibata.
